First Grade Future Programmers!

First graders have been learning coding as part of the International Hour of Code on Code.org. They had some great teachers: third and fourth graders came down to teach them all about it using the app Kodable.  The first graders took to it very easily and their teachers did a great job!  CLICK pictures to enlarge!

WOW! Thank You Ms. Manna's 5th Grade Class!!

The generous parents of these amazing students surprised me today with "Dot," representing the brains of a robot and compatible with our current robot, "Dash."  These robots provide so many ways for the curriculum to come to life, as well as teach our students the importance of coding and how that skill can help them in other areas of their lives.  I was SO surprised and overwhelmed -  so much gratitude for this incredible gift!  And of course, we began using it today!  Thank you parents and students for your thoughtfulness and generosity.  It means the world to  me... you know how to make a technology teacher VERY happy! In conjunction with their unit on circuits in science, fourth graders worked collaboratively to build amazing electronics!  The way they worked together and problem-solved was commendable.

Thank you to Bella, Jackson and Amelia B. for bringing in the Snap Circuits and to Amelia F., Meghan, Jackson,  Julia P., and Amelia B. for sharing their knowledge with the fourth graders.  A special thanks to Mrs. Bombardier for letting her students take part.  A team effort!

Enjoy!

Full STEAM Ahead for Fifth Graders...

Center 5th graders are at the beginning stages of developing a STEAM lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Design, and Math).

Students moved through nine stations today, including robotics, circuits, and coding programs.

Student responses when asked what was learned:

  • How to work as a team to get an end product.
  • How to stretch our thinking.
  • To plan, think it through.
  • To express creativity and overcome challenges.
  • That there are many possible answers!
We are very excited to be challenging ourselves and welcome any ideas to add to our STEAM lab! Please respond in the comments section... thank you!

Enjoy the short excerpt of our work!
